28/10/2008 - Bolton Arms, Old Basing - An update on progress... The restaurant opening is still 3 weeks away as work in the kitchen is not yet completed. The front room to the left is furnished with comfortable sink-in armchairs but you may need to be there early to bag one. This room will have a servery for casual dining. The guvn'r Duncan is very enthusiastic as is the chef Jake who is the real beer man. They are both keen to receive suggestions on what beers are wanted. The regular beer, London Pride, is likely to remain while it remains popular and the guests will depend on what people request. Local beers are common among the requests but they will also include distant guests in their range. The Greene King has gone and the beers are currently London Pride, Cotleigh Harrier and Brains Rev James. - Reported by Ken Brewster

19/10/2008 - The Sandrock, Wrecclesham - Out of the branch area, but a pub that all real ale lovers should visit at least once in their lifetime. 8 real ales all in excellent condition, unfortunately none of the Black Country ales, for which they are well know, were available on our visit. You can do a pub crawl at the Sandrock without leaving your bar stool; I only managed 5 before I fell off mine. On Saturday (18 October) Bowmans Swift One, Hogs Back TEA and Hop Garden Gold, Arndel Sussex Gold, Surrey Hills Shere Drop and Gilt Complex, Hop Back Crop Circle and Summer Lightning were on offer all at £3 except the Bowmans at £2.90. The Sandrock also does first class "pub grub". - Reported by BRW

19/10/2008 - Bolton Arms, Old Basing - The Bolton Arms is partially re-opened. The previous two bars at the front of the pub have seen major changes. The counters have been removed and one room is being converted to a restaurant, while the other looks like a restaurant waiting area. Work will not be completed for 3 weeks or so. The room at the back, which was a restaurant/function area, is now the bar and is open, although still smelling of paint. London Pride is the standard beer and the two guests currently are Greene King IPA and Adnam's Broadside. The new landlord is interested in suggestions in what guests to get in. - Reported by Ken Brewster

15/10/2008 - The Harvest Home in Whitchurch is seeing an increase in the demand for real ales. As well as the Greene King IPA (which must be on the bar) this week they have had Hop Back Summer Lightning and Butcombe Bitter on the other two pumps, both at £2.50. Next along is Butcombe Gold. Always ask what is on as they often don't have pump clips.
Meanwhile the Sports and Social Club has St Austell Tribute on the bar, with Thwaites Lancaster Bomber waiting in the cellar. - Reported by johnpb

14/10/2008 - Queens Arms, Basingstoke - Great night for the Good Beer Guide launch. Beers on: Triple F Altons Pride, Irvings Type 42, Ballards Wild (apparently a mix of Wassail, Barley Wine and Mild) plus London Pride, 6X and Courage Best. Representatives from 2 local breweries were there to enjoy the evening and Mark - Reported by Phil Myatt

5/10/2008 - The Bell, Odiham - Popped in to this community pub tucked in behind the main road, opposite the church, at 5.15 on Thursday while waiting for the wife. Not only was it open but buzzing. A fellow member told me that it's always the same. Hobgoblin at £2.70 was very good. Other beers on offer included Courage Best and Bombadier. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. - Reported by BRW

1/10/2008 - The Baverstock Arms, in the Milestones Museum presently has Fullers London Pride and Butser on its bar, the latter proclaiming 'Horndean, Hampshire' when it is brewed in Chiswick. Both were OK - I also enjoyed a 'tour' of its cooled cellar! They should serve a Hampshire brewed beer though - but difficult when the whole theme is historical and based on 'Gales'. Something to work on methinks! - Reported by johnpb
